Lucy Sparkles & Friends YouTube Video has over 40K hits!

We are super excited because one of our videos has reached over 40 000 unique views on YouTube! In the video, Lucy Sparkles and Richard Sparkles sing Peter Combe’s classic children’s song, Mr. Clicketty Cane (with the help of Annie and Will). See below for musical aims, learning outcomes, lyrics and further activities.

Main musical aims

Pulse & Rhythm (to feel pulse and rhythm through actions).

Main learning outcomes

Communication & Language (to develop listening and attention through repetition, song, rhyme, playfulness and call and echo), Communication & Language (to develop the understanding of humour and the understanding of words in a song or rhyme through actions), Communication & Language (to develop speech through singing and repetition), Physical Development (to mimic actions and move to the pulse and/or rhythm), Literacy (to develop an awareness of rhyme and alliteration), Literacy (to join in with a repeated refrain), Mathematics (to recognise patterns), Understanding the World (to develop skills in technology through using YouTube as a tool for learning) and Expressive Arts & Design (to move, sing and be imaginative).  This song is also great for memory development.

Activities for ‘Mr Clicketty Cane’ (wash your face in orange juice)

Babies: Bounce your baby on your lap to the pulse. Have them face you so they can see any silly faces that you make. At the end of each chorus, bounce them three times, in time with the rhythm of the three chords that play before coming back into “When My Clicketty Cane…”.

Toddlers: Toddlers can listen to the song and begin to join in with singing some of the words. They bounce on your lap, facing you, for the verses (“When Mr Clicketty Cane…”) and then they copy your actions (as seen in the video) for the chorus (“Wash your face…). At the end of each chorus, bounce them three times, in time with the rhythm of the three chords that play before coming back into “When My Clicketty Cane…”.

Pre-schoolers:
1. Pre-schoolers can sing the song and copy the actions as seen in the video.
2. Talk to the children about the pattern in the song lyrics and help them to recognise it.
3. Talk to them about why the words are funny.
4. Sing through the song as usual except each time you get to the chorus, a child suggests a new line for the chorus and makes up an action to go along with it. E.g. Tie your shoes with spaghetti. The rest of the children copy. Choose a different child each time.

Lyrics

When Mr Clicketty Cane,
Plays a silly game,
All the kids in the street,
They like to do the same.

Wash your face in orange juice (repeat),
Clean your teeth with bubblegum (repeat),
Fix the fence with sticky tape (repeat),
Brush your hair with a toothbrush (repeat),
Fry an egg on a slippery dip (repeat),
Belly flop in a pizza…
Belly flop in a pizza? Eeeeeww!!!
